In addition to three exams, exercises for our course include a literary analysis that addresses one or more of the assigned readings.  Below you will find links to optional exercises for each of the course hero topics.  The essay exercises are explained on separate pages that include instructions regarding the topics and directions for submitting them.  You choose the exercise and a topic selected from the options provided for the exercises.

 

Exercise 1

This exercise guides you through the formal analysis of a work of short fiction and its development as a written essay.  All materials for this exercise are found in the Week 1 website, including the reading and supplementary content.

 

Exercise 2

This exercise introduces the concept of the tragic hero.

 

Exercise 3

This exercise addresses the motif of the archetypal hero.

 

Exercise 4

This exercise explores Shakespeare’s concept of the hero.

 

Exercise 5

This exercise reviews the concept of the modern tragic hero.

 

Exercise 6

This exercise introduces the concept of the anti/ironic hero.
