Stephen Crane is best known for "The Red Badge of Courage," his study of the psychological effects of war on the combatants.  His first major work, "Maggie: Girl of the Streets," explores the theory of "naturalism," a theme that can be found operating as well in a number of his shorter works, including "The Open Boat."
