A growing awareness of and attention to the
processes of the mind, and particularly mental dysfunctions, influenced
a number of writers. Some skirted the "Gothic romances" of previous
decades while others pursued clinical madness. Among these writers
are Henry James, Ambrose Bierce, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and Kate Chopin.
