With the rise of the "Age of Realism" in American literature, regional literature became popular.  Bret Harte and Mark Twain (Samuel L. Clemens) began their careers in journalism and drew upon the traditions of the far West.  Mary E. Wilkins Freeman was devoted to preserving the character of her New England communities.  Joel Chandler Harris was drawn to the folk traditions of the Seminole blacks of Florida.
