Tennessee Williams

.
Tennessee Williams was the third playwright
whose works dominated both serious and popular theater in the twentieth
century. Williams introduced into the theater themes of sexuality,
violence, and depravity that had remained taboo before his breakthrough
dramas. On the other hand, those same works are depicted against
a backdrop of social deprivation which make these human aberrations understandable
if not excusable. Both popularly and critically acclaimed,
Williams' works played both off and on Broadway, were translated into highly
successful films, and were translated and produced abroad.
