WEEK 10: American Poetry
The Feminist Voice

(Return

.
The turbulence of the 1960's spawned two decades
of stocktaking by many who came to see themselves as somehow maligned and
intimidated by classism, racism, and sexism. "Feminism" became a
term for a period of female consciousness-raising about the traditional
roles of women, their social status, and their potential for change and
the improvement of their lots in society. Expectedly, the literature
of the period, with roots in such ground breaking work as in the writings
of Gilman in "The Yellow Wall-Paper" and Kate Chopin in "The Awakening,"
became a mechanism for both new feminist expression and interpretations.
