Unit 7: The Native American Heritage:
Indigenous Cultures and Letters
(Return to the English 2327 Table of Contents)
(Return to the English 2327 Syllabus)

Essentially, the European response to Indian populations was to stereotype them in one of either two extremes: the "Savage" or the "Noble Savage."  Actual European treatment of indigenous communities often reflected the two images.  This unit explores representative selections of rare indigenous records and the idealization and burlesque of North American indigenous tribes.
