Unit 15: The Romantic Temper and the House Divided
"I Sing Myself"--Walt Whitman
(Return to the English 2327 Table of Contents)
(Return to the English 2327 Syllabus)

This unit introduces the spiritual and celebratory works of Walt Whitman.  Deeply moved and inspired by the transcendental philosophy of Ralph Waldo Emerson who "greet[ed Whitman] at the beginning of a great career,"  Whitman's "Song of Myself" charts the evolution of his spiritual epiphany and, with his other works, reflects the "free verse" form that Whitman originated.
