. This unit introduces the spiritual and celebratory works of Walt Whitman. Deeply moved and inspired by the transcendental philosophy of Ralph Waldo Emerson who "greet[ed Whitman] at the beginning of a great career," Whitman's "Song of Myself" charts the evolution of his spiritual epiphany and, with his other works, reflects the "free verse" form that Whitman originated.
