1) How does Harriet Beecher Stowe depict black characters in Uncle Tom’s Cabin?  To what extent might she be accused of stereotyping? 
2) How does Stowe make her appeals against slavery?  Through reason?  Through emotion?  Through irony?  Through personal response?

Abraham Lincoln's "Second Inaugural Address" and the "Gettysburg Address" 
1) What elements of his writing style make Lincoln's addresses so memorable? 
2) Contrast Lincoln's "Second Inaugural Address" with his "First Inaugural Address."  Outside of the brevity, what makes this speech so appealing to Americans at war?  How does he attempt to instill confidence in himself as their leader?
