Notes on Modernism
The period of the 1890's and the first decade of the twentieth century before 1914 and the outbreak of World War I exhibited a cultural perspective that came to be known as "modernism," a movement that defined the focus and development, not only of literature for some writers, but also for artists and designers.  For a review of the major features of modernism, see "Modernism."
