The short story is a relatively recent genre (type) of literature.  Its form came to fruition in the 19th century in the writings of the French writer Guy de Maupassant, the Russian Anton Chekhov, and the American genius, Edgar Allan Poe, who created the "ideal short story."  Herman Melville and Nathaniel Hawthorne employed an ancient story frame, the "allegory," in which key elements function as symbols.  The literature of both writers, however, exhibit far more complex relationships than a more simplistic interpretation would suggest.
