(Return to the English 2326 Table of Contents) (Return to the English 2326 Syllabus) Assignment Due: Exercise 1 . This unit examines selected writings of Colonial New England authors whose works begin the chronicle of American literature. Set against the harsh realities of settlement and the difficulties of establishing sustainable communities, the histories and the journals from the period of the early 1600's offer glimpses of the values and assumptions that drove the Europeans to colonize the North American wilderness. Later works demonstrate the mastery of literary skills required of even the best of their literary counterparts.
