One of the two powerful United States playwrights of the mid-twentieth century, Tennessee Williams drew heavily upon his own experiences in "The Glass Menagerie," but like his counterpart, Arthur Miller, Williams' plays captured much of the disaffection with American self-assurances and address the conflicts addressed in the lives of "the common man."
