The first American soldier from Johnson County, Texas, to die in World War I, Andrew Jackson James was only 22 when, as a young, bookish lad, he donned the uniform of his country for service in the European fronts.  "A peaceable man,  [his] urge was to heal rather than to kill" [. . .] in a war "miniscule in importance when compared to the grim conditions in his family that he knew for certain."
